Facts About Serevent

Serevent (salmeterol) controls the symptoms of asthma and is considered a long-acting bronchodilator that GlaxoSmithKline has been producing with the FDA's approval in the United Stated States since 1994 (1990 in Europe). Serevent is used by itself and also as one of two ingredients in GlaxoSmithKline's asthma treatment Advair, the company's biggest product with sales of $4 billion a year. Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, characterized by periodic attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

Consumer advocacy websites like WorstPills.org, Best Pills News listed the asthma drug salmeterol (SEREVENT) as a DO NOT USE drug after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on January 23, 2003 that a large safety study involving the drug had been halted prematurely because an interim analysis of outcomes suggested that the drug may be associated with an increased risk of life-threatening asthma episodes or asthma-related deaths.

Symptoms of asthma that would result in a Serevent prescription include:

  • wheezing
  • cough with or without sputum (phlegm) production
  • shortness of breath that is aggravated by exercise
  • breathing that requires increased work
  • intercostal retractions (pulling of the skin between the ribs when breathing)
  • extreme difficulty breathing
  • bluish color to the lips and face
  • severe anxiety
  • rapid pulse
  • sweating
  • decreased level of consciousness (severe drowsiness or confusion) during an asthma attack
  • nasal flaring
  • chest pain
  • tightness in the chest
  • abnormal breathing pattern, in which exhalation (breathing out) takes more than twice as long as inspiration (breathing in)
  • breathing which temporarily stops
  • coughing up blood

Serious side-effects that may curtail the prescription of Serevent in the near future include:

  • Death
  • Serious Bronchial Damage
  • Triggering of serious Asthma Attacks
